The role of Public Affairs Manager is vital to fostering the connection between AAA Northeast’s work and values with the public, shaping the way we are perceived as a brand.
Under the direction of the Vice President of Public Affairs, the Public Affairs Manager will oversee all public and government affairs activities, initiatives and campaigns in the Massachusetts market. The Manager will act as the face of AAA Northeast as our Massachusetts media spokesperson by communicating the Club’s position clearly and effectively to internal and external audiences. In addition, he/she will monitor, analyze and communicate legislation related to core issues critical to AAA Northeast. The Public Affairs Manager is our lobbyist, directing all state legislative, political and lobbying activities for the club in Massachusetts and collaborating with multi-state government, public affairs, and marketing teams to drive effective cross-market engagement. This individual will also cultivate strong relationships within the political community, media, the public and our business partners.
Execute a proactive lobbying effort in MA, focusing on representing the Club and AAA National interests. File AAA sponsored legislation, lobby legislators, agency heads and their staff to educate and influence the outcome of issues vital to the motoring and traveling public. Oversee staff to ensure legislative and regulatory arena are being monitored regularly, as well as identify opportunities and threats as they arise. Research issues, develop position statements and provide supportive or opposing public testimony before legislative committees. Comply with all laws, regulations and professional standards.
Represent the Club at community meetings regarding transportation projects, programs and issues. Serve on committees and taskforces convened by public agencies to get public input during the planning stages of road and bridge projects.
Represent AAA Northeast at conferences and participate in policy discussions on complex traffic safety and transportation issues.
Be the media spokesperson in MA, fielding daily requests, including weekends. Conduct interviews both in-person and virtually. Confer with Marketing SVP and Public Affairs VP regarding questions on controversial issues. Regularly monitor news reports and media coverage of political, travel and transportation issues, in addition to any issue that could affect the Club in MA.
Sit on MA Traffic Safety Coalition and a variety of other coalitions and committees. Develop and maintain productive relationships with legislators, MassDOT and Highway Safety Division partners, and other state and local officials, AAA partners and stakeholders. Work closely with the MA Registry of Motor Vehicles on a sustained marketing campaign designed to promote the AAA/RMV program in the branches.
Oversee all traffic safety programs and activity in the state in coordination with Club policies and procedures and direct staff to achieve desired outcomes. Frequent community outreach engagement with the 34 branch locations throughout the state.
Provide leadership to direct and indirect reports, ensuring that the team is properly staffed with trained individuals. Build bench strength to ensure ongoing viability of the department.
7+years of relevant legislative/government and community relations experience.
At least 2 years of experience with media relations, including conducting interviews.
Knowledge of the legislative processes of state and local administrative agencies.
Strong interpersonal and critical thinking skills, as well as excellent judgement and decision-making.
Adept at public speaking.
Impeccable written and verbal communication.
Ability to exercise independent judgment in the process of representing AAA at government and community forums and externally in the media.
Foster strong relationships internally and externally, among many levels.
Political savvy including influence and persuasion.
Bachelor’s degree (required) or master’s degree in public policy, government affairs or related fields preferred.
The pay range for this position in Rhode Island is $95,000.00 - $117,875.00. Base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Annual bonuses are some of the additional forms of compensation offered.
